Spiral Wound Gasket with Outer Ring for Raised Face & Flat Face Flanges

Buying a spiral wound gasket for RF or FF flanges? The outer (centring) ring holds the V-shaped stainless winding in place on the bolt circle and stops it being crushed by over-bolting — so the gasket seals correctly every time, even when the flange faces are less than perfect.

Manufactured in our own workshop to ASME B16.20 / EN 1514-2 / API 601, in sizes DN15–DN3000 and Class 150–2500. Send your flange size, media, pressure and temperature — technical reply and quotation within 2 business hours.

A spiral wound gasket with outer ring (CG type, KXT 600-CG) combines a V-shaped metal winding with a centring ring that positions the gasket on the bolt circle and limits over-compression. Sizes DN15–DN3000, Class 150–2500, RF and FF flanges. Standard supply is SS316 winding + graphite filler + carbon steel zinc-plated outer ring. EN 10204 3.1 certificates available on request.

01What the outer ring actually does for you

Buyers often ask why they should pay for an outer ring when a basic winding-only gasket is cheaper. The answer is in the installation and in the long-term reliability of the joint:

  • It centres the gasket on the bolt circle. The sealing element is positioned accurately on the flange face by the bolts — no guessing, no off-centre seating, no partial sealing.
  • It acts as a compression stop. When the bolts are tightened, the outer ring limits how far the winding can be crushed, protecting it from over-compression and keeping the spring-back that makes a spiral wound gasket seal.
  • It keeps the winding intact. The winding is spot-welded to the outer ring, so the gasket will not unwind or distort during handling and installation.
  • It works on both RF and FF flanges. One construction, two flange types — fewer part numbers to stock, less chance of picking the wrong gasket from the warehouse.
When CG is not enough: the outer ring does not protect the inside of the winding. For high vacuum, high flow velocity, or media that causes turbulence and erosion, specify the CGI version with an inner ring as well — it prevents inward buckling and shields the flange bore.

02CG or CGI? Pick the right construction

Both constructions use the same V-shaped winding and filler. The difference is the inner ring — and whether your line actually needs it. The two panels below show what each version is designed to do.

Style KXT 600-CG Winding + Outer Ring
Spiral Wound Gasket with Outer Ring KXT 600-CG construction diagram
  • Centring ring positions the gasket on the bolt circle
  • Serves as compression stop against over-bolting
  • Suitable for raised face and flat face flanges
  • General purpose, most economical ringed version
Best for: general piping, pumps, valves, steam and utility lines
Style KXT 600-CGI Winding + Inner Ring + Outer Ring
Spiral Wound Gasket with Inner and Outer Ring KXT 600-CGI construction diagram
  • Inner ring prevents inward buckling of the winding
  • Reduces turbulence and erosion at the flange bore
  • Acts as a heat shield and corrosion barrier
  • Highest safety for critical flanged joints
Best for: high pressure, high vacuum, cyclic service, heat exchangers

Still unsure? Tell us the line conditions and we will recommend the construction — there is no benefit in selling you a CGI gasket if a CG will do the job.

Standard supply is SS316 winding with graphite filler and a carbon steel zinc-plated outer ring — the most cost-effective combination for steam, water, oil and general chemical service. For aggressive or high-temperature duty where 304/316 windings are not enough, see our dedicated special materials spiral wound gaskets range.

04Where these gaskets are used

  • High temperature and high pressure equipment
  • Cryogenic and low temperature equipment
  • General flange joints — raised face and flat face
  • Pumps, valves, compressors and fittings
  • Heat exchangers, columns and reactor flanges — see our heat exchanger spiral wound gaskets
  • Steam, condensate, water, oil and gas utility lines

It is a general-purpose gasket, but it is not a "one size fits everything" gasket. If your line runs at high vacuum, high flow velocity or with a highly aggressive medium, tell us before ordering — the correct answer may be the CGI version or a different filler.

Related product ranges in the same family: all spiral wound gaskets, standard spiral wound gasket (KXT-600), inner and outer ring (CGI) version, oval and oblong gaskets for boilers, ring joint gaskets and expanded graphite gaskets.

08Buyer FAQ

What is your minimum order quantity?

There is no rigid minimum for standard sizes — we regularly supply small quantities for maintenance and shutdown work. For special winding metals a modest MOQ may apply, and we will state it clearly in the quotation.

Do you supply material certificates?

Yes. EN 10204 3.1 certificates are available on request, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV or client-nominated) can be arranged at additional cost. See our certificates.

Can you produce non-standard sizes or bolt circles?

Yes. Non-standard OD, ID, bolt circle, thickness and pass partitions are routine. Send a drawing (PDF, DWG or DXF) or a sample and we will confirm feasibility and price.

What payment terms do you accept?

Normally T/T with a 30% deposit and balance before shipment. L/C at sight can be discussed for larger orders. Terms are confirmed in the quotation.

How quickly can you quote?

Send the flange standard and size, construction, winding metal, filler, media, pressure, temperature and quantity. With these details we can give you a technical recommendation and price within 2 business hours.

What if the gasket leaks after installation?

Contact us with the bolting torque, flange condition and operating data. Most failures trace back to insufficient bolt load, a damaged flange face or the wrong filler for the media — we will help you work out which, and replace the gasket if it is our fault.
