PTFE Guide Strip for Hydraulic, Pneumatic and Piston Rod Guidance

When a piston rod moves in a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder, the metal rod and the cylinder wall will eventually touch without a guide strip between them. Kaxite's KXT PG120 bronze filled PTFE guide strip is the bearing element that guides the rod, absorbs side loads and vibration, and allows foreign particles to embed in the strip instead of damaging the cylinder wall or the rod seal.

  • Hydraulic cylinders — rod bearing and piston bearing service
  • Pneumatic cylinders — light load, dry or lubricated air service
  • Press equipment — ram and guide bushing
  • Chemical and corrosive media — PTFE's inert chemistry resists almost all industrial fluids

Material: PTFE + 30% to 50% bronze powder. Operating temperature -60 °C to +150 °C. Tensile strength ≥ 15 MPa. Max surface speed 15.0 m/s. Rod diameter 10 mm to 1500 mm. Carbon filled and phenolic fabric composite variants available for dry-running and heavy-load service.

Send your rod diameter, groove width, strip thickness and material grade — our technical team replies with a recommendation and price within 2 business hours.

Who makes this PTFE guide strip Reviewed by the Kaxite sealing engineering team

Kaxite Sealing (Ningbo Kaxite Sealing Materials Co., Ltd.) has manufactured PTFE products, compression sheets, gaskets and hydraulic sealing components since 1990. Our PTFE guide strips are machined or moulded from PTFE compounds that combine virgin PTFE with bronze, carbon or other fillers to raise compressive strength and wear resistance while preserving PTFE's low friction and chemical inertness.

Every batch is checked for density, tensile strength and dimensional accuracy. Material declaration and batch traceability are available on request, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) can be arranged or hosted at additional cost.

What a PTFE Guide Strip Does

In a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder, the piston rod moves back and forth thousands of times over its service life. The rod and the cylinder wall are both metal. Without a bearing element between them, the rod will contact the cylinder wall, wear through the surface finish, and eventually damage the rod seal.

A PTFE guide strip solves this in three ways:

  • Guides the rod. The strip centres the rod in the cylinder bore, keeping the metal surfaces apart and maintaining the correct sealing gap.
  • Absorbs side loads and vibration. Side loads, off-centre forces and vibration are absorbed by the strip rather than being transferred directly into the rod seal.
  • Embeds foreign particles. Dust, metal chips and other foreign matter embed in the PTFE strip instead of scoring the cylinder wall or the rod. Because PTFE is soft relative to steel, the particles sink into the strip's surface instead of being dragged along the metal.

The bronze filling raises compressive strength and thermal conductivity above virgin PTFE, so the strip can carry higher loads and run at higher surface speeds. This is why bronze filled PTFE is the standard grade for lubricated hydraulic service.

Choose the Right Material Grade

Three material grades cover most guide strip applications. They differ mainly in compressive strength, maximum surface speed, recommended mating surface and suitability for dry running.

Material Compressive strength Max surface speed Recommended mating surface Typical use
Bronze filled PTFE (KXT PG120) 15 MPa at 25 °C · 12 MPa at 80 °C · 8 MPa at 120 °C (static) 15.0 m/s Steel hard chrome, steel hardened Light load, lubricated environment; general hydraulic service
Carbon filled PTFE 15 MPa at 25 °C · 12 MPa at 80 °C · 8 MPa at 120 °C (static) 15.0 m/s Stainless steel, hard anodised aluminium Light duty, can run dry
Phenolic (fabric composite) 300 MPa at 25 °C (static) · 50 MPa at 60 °C (dynamic) 1.0 m/s Steel hard chrome, steel hardened Heavy load, lubricated environment

The compressive strength figures are for reference only; actual allowable load depends on groove geometry, temperature, rod diameter, side load and duty cycle. Tell us your operating conditions and we will confirm the correct grade.

Note on mating surface and PV: The bronze filled PTFE guide strip is designed for hard chrome or hardened steel counter-surfaces. Using a softer or rougher counter-surface will accelerate wear on both the strip and the cylinder wall. If your application combines high load with high surface speed, check the PV (pressure × velocity) limit with Kaxite before specifying the strip — exceeding the limit is the most common cause of premature guide strip failure.

Buyer FAQ

What is a PTFE guide strip used for?

A PTFE guide strip is used to guide and bear the piston rod in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, preventing metal-to-metal contact between the rod and cylinder wall. It reduces wear, absorbs side loads and vibration, and allows foreign particles to embed into the strip instead of damaging the cylinder or seal.

What is the difference between bronze filled, carbon filled and phenolic PTFE guide strips?

Bronze filled PTFE (KXT PG120) is the general-purpose grade for lubricated hydraulic service, with compressive strength of 15 MPa at 25 °C, 12 MPa at 80 °C and 8 MPa at 120 °C (static), and max surface speed 15.0 m/s. Carbon filled PTFE is for light duty and dry running, with stainless steel or hard anodised aluminium as the recommended mating surface. Phenolic fabric composite is for heavy load with compressive strength of 300 MPa static at 25 °C and 50 MPa dynamic at 60 °C, but limited to 1.0 m/s max surface speed.

What is the operating temperature range?

The bronze filled PTFE guide strip (KXT PG120) operates from -60 °C to +150 °C. Above +150 °C the PTFE material starts to soften and lose dimensional stability. Tell us your actual temperature profile and we will confirm whether a different PTFE compound or a phenolic composite is a better choice.

What sizes are available?

The bronze filled PTFE guide strip is available for rod diameters from 10 mm up to 1500 mm. Strips can be supplied in straight lengths for on-site cutting, or pre-cut to the required length and profile to drawing. Tell us the rod diameter, groove width, thickness and operating pressure and we will confirm the correct strip size.

Can you supply custom profiles and cut rings?

Yes. Non-standard cross-sections, beveled ends and closed rings cut from strip are produced to drawing or sample. Send us a PDF, DWG or DXF drawing and we will confirm feasibility and price.

What is the recommended mating surface for bronze filled PTFE guide strip?

For bronze filled PTFE the recommended mating surface is steel hard chrome or steel hardened. For carbon filled PTFE the recommended mating surface is stainless steel or hard anodised aluminium. Using a softer or rougher counter-surface will accelerate wear on both the strip and the cylinder wall.

Do you supply material certificates?

Yes. Material declaration and batch traceability are available on request, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV or client-nominated) can be arranged or hosted at additional cost. See our certificates.

How quickly can you quote and ship?

Send the rod diameter, groove width, strip thickness, material grade (bronze filled, carbon filled or phenolic) and quantity. With these details we can give you a technical recommendation and price within 2 business hours. Standard sizes normally ship within 7–15 working days of order confirmation.
