What Is Basalt Fiber Sleeving?

Basalt fiber sleeving (also called basalt sleeve or basalt fiber braided sleeve; Kaxite model KXT BF700) is a tubular insulation sleeve braided from continuous basalt filament yarn. Basalt fiber is produced by melting natural basalt rock at around 1450–1500 °C and drawing it into continuous filaments — a process similar to glass fiber production but using volcanic rock as the raw material instead of synthetic glass batch. The braided sleeve retains the fiber's high temperature resistance, good electrical insulation and good chemical stability.

Basalt fiber sleeving is a middle-ground material between glass fiber sleeving and ceramic fiber sleeving: it tolerates higher temperature than standard E-glass, and costs less than ceramic fiber. Standard braided inner diameters range from 4 mm to 80 mm, and silicone-coated, fire-retardant and vermiculite-coated versions are available on request.

Why Choose Basalt Fiber Sleeving

Basalt fiber sleeving is selected for high-temperature protection when glass fiber is not enough and ceramic fiber is over-spec. Key advantages of basalt fiber sleeving include:

  • Higher temperature than glass fiber — continuous service up to +700 °C, compared with around +550 °C for standard E-glass sleeving.
  • Lower cost than ceramic fiber — ceramic fiber sleeving handles higher temperatures, but basalt fiber is a more economical choice when the working temperature is within its range.
  • Good chemical stability — basalt fiber has good resistance to acids, alkalis and most industrial chemicals, and better alkali resistance than E-glass.
  • Good electrical insulation — suitable for high-temperature cable and wire protection.
  • Low thermal conductivity — 0.031–0.038 W/m·K, similar to glass fiber and lower than many metals.
  • Flexible and easy to install — the braided construction slides over cables, hoses and pipes without special tooling.
  • Coating options — silicone coating adds abrasion, moisture and oil resistance; vermiculite coating improves molten metal splash resistance.

Handling note — please read before cutting or installing. Basalt fiber is a mineral fiber. Cutting, machining or demolition can generate respirable fiber dust that may cause skin and respiratory irritation. Use appropriate dust extraction, gloves and a dust mask when cutting or installing the sleeving, and follow local health and safety regulations. Silicone-coated versions generate less dust during handling. Not for food-contact or potable-water use.

Basalt Fiber vs Glass Fiber vs Ceramic Fiber Sleeving

Buyers often compare basalt fiber sleeving with glass fiber and ceramic fiber sleeving. The table below summarises the main differences to help select the right material for each application.

Property Basalt Fiber E-Glass Fiber Ceramic Fiber
Continuous service temperature Up to +700 °C Up to ~+550 °C Up to +1260 °C
Short-term peak +750 °C ~+600 °C +1350 °C
Alkali resistance Good Fair Good
Tensile strength Good Good Moderate
Thermal conductivity 0.031–0.038 W/m·K 0.034–0.040 W/m·K 0.06–0.13 W/m·K
Cost Medium Low High
Best for High-temp cable and pipe protection where cost matters Low-cost general thermal insulation Extreme high-temperature or molten metal splash

For general insulation up to +550 °C, E-glass fiber sleeving is the most economical choice. For continuous service up to +700 °C, basalt fiber sleeving is the recommended middle ground. For continuous service above +700 °C or molten metal splash, choose ceramic fiber sleeving. See Ceramic Fiber for the full range.

Typical Applications of Basalt Fiber Sleeving

Basalt fiber sleeving is specified wherever a flexible, high-temperature insulation sleeve is required. Common applications include:

  • Cable and wire protection — high-temperature electrical cables in industrial furnaces, kilns and heat treatment equipment.
  • Automotive and exhaust systems — exhaust pipe heat shielding, sensor cable protection and engine compartment insulation.
  • Hose and pipe insulation — protecting process hoses, fuel lines and hydraulic lines from radiant heat.
  • Industrial furnace wiring — thermocouple leads, heating element connections and control wiring.
  • Metallurgy and foundry — protection of cables and hoses near molten metal, with vermiculite-coated versions.
  • Power generation — boiler, turbine and steam line cable protection.
  • Chemical processing — insulation of process lines carrying high-temperature fluids.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is basalt fiber sleeving used for?
Basalt fiber sleeving is used for high-temperature insulation and protection of cables, wires, hoses, pipes and process lines. Typical applications include cable and wire protection in industrial furnaces, automotive and exhaust system heat shielding, hose and pipe insulation, high-temperature electrical insulation and thermal protection of process lines in metallurgy, chemical and power generation industries.
What is the maximum temperature of basalt fiber sleeving?
Continuous service temperature is −260 °C to +700 °C. Short-term peak temperature can reach +750 °C, and the basalt fiber melts at around +1350 °C. For continuous service above +700 °C, we recommend ceramic fiber sleeving instead. Tell us your actual temperature cycle and we will confirm the appropriate grade.
What is the difference between basalt fiber and glass fiber sleeving?
Basalt fiber sleeving has a higher continuous service temperature (up to +700 °C) than standard E-glass fiber sleeving (up to around +550 °C). Basalt fiber also has better alkali resistance, higher tensile strength and better thermal stability at elevated temperature. The cost of basalt fiber is slightly higher than E-glass, but lower than ceramic fiber, which makes it an economical middle-ground choice for high-temperature insulation.
What sizes of basalt fiber sleeving are available?
Standard braided inner diameters range from 4 mm to 80 mm. Custom sizes, wall thicknesses and flat-braided constructions are available on request. Send us the cable or pipe outer diameter, working temperature and quantity and we will recommend the closest standard size or quote a custom run.
Can the basalt fiber sleeving be silicone-coated?
Yes. Silicone-coated basalt fiber sleeving is available for applications that require additional protection against abrasion, moisture, oil or molten metal splash. Silicone coating also improves flexibility and reduces fiber dust. Fire-retardant and vermiculite-coated versions are available on request.
Is basalt fiber sleeving safe for handling?
Basalt fiber is a mineral fiber and, like glass or ceramic fiber, can cause skin and respiratory irritation when cut or handled without protection. Use appropriate dust extraction, gloves and a dust mask when cutting or installing the sleeving, and follow local health and safety regulations. Silicone-coated versions generate less dust during handling.
What is the MOQ and delivery time?
Standard MOQ is 100 kg, negotiable for trial orders and mixed containers. Production lead time is normally 15–25 days after order confirmation, and stock sizes can ship sooner.
Can I get a free sample before placing an order?
Yes. We provide free short sleeve samples for evaluation; the buyer covers the courier cost, which can be deducted from the first order. Send us your inner diameter, quantity and application details so we can send the most suitable sample.
