Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets KXT600-EX — Resilient Metal Sealing for Automotive & Aircraft Exhaust Manifolds

Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets KXT600-EX are made from V-shaped, spiral-wound layers of stainless steel combined with either a non-asbestos filler or flexible graphite. The gasket is available in both two-hole and three-hole designs for all Lycoming-style exhaust manifold applications.

The gasket is resilient and automatically adjusts for mechanical compression, internal pressure variations, and temperature changes. A flat carbon-steel outer ring centers the gasket and controls compression when the exhaust manifold bolts are tightened. In addition to superior sealing qualities, Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets are reusable when the exhaust manifold is loosened or removed — but they must be replaced at overhaul.

01

What is an Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket and why is it used on exhaust manifolds?

The mechanics of spiral wound sealing in high-temperature exhaust service
Direct answer: An Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket is a semi-metallic gasket built from V-shaped, spiral-wound layers of stainless steel alternating with a non-asbestos or flexible graphite filler. The spiral windings give the gasket a spring-like resilience that automatically adjusts to mechanical compression, internal pressure variation, and temperature cycling — the exact conditions found in automotive and aircraft exhaust manifolds.
02

What materials and construction are used in KXT600-EX Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets?

Four components work together to seal exhaust gases across extreme temperature swings

V-Shaped Stainless Steel Windings

The core is a spiral-wound strip of stainless steel formed into a V-profile. This V-shape acts as a spring, providing the gasket its resilience under compression and thermal expansion.

Non-Asbestos or Flexible Graphite Filler

Between every steel winding is a layer of non-asbestos filler or flexible graphite. The filler is what actually seals the exhaust gas, while the steel windings supply mechanical strength.

Carbon-Steel Outer Ring

A flat carbon-steel ring around the outer edge of the spiral windings centers the gasket on the flange and limits how far it can compress when the manifold bolts are tightened.

Two-Hole or Three-Hole Configuration

Available for all Lycoming-style exhaust manifold layouts using either a two-hole or three-hole gasket design, matching the bolt pattern of the target engine.

03

How does the spiral wound design adjust during service?

Four ways the gasket self-compensates for real-world exhaust conditions
01 Mechanical Compression

When manifold bolts are tightened, the V-shaped windings compress like springs. The carbon-steel outer ring prevents over-compression and keeps the gasket centered.

02 Internal Pressure Variation

As exhaust pressure rises and falls, the stainless steel windings expand and contract to maintain the sealing load on the flanges.

03 Thermal Cycling

Exhaust manifolds heat and cool rapidly. The spring-like spiral windings absorb thermal expansion without losing bolt load — something a flat gasket cannot do.

04 Reassembly Without Replacement

If the exhaust manifold is loosened or removed, the Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket is reusable. It only needs to be replaced at engine overhaul.

04

Which applications and industries use KXT600-EX Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets?

Six sectors where exhaust sealing reliability is critical
Aircraft Piston Engines

Primarily designed for Lycoming-style piston aircraft engines, sealing the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head across extreme thermal cycling.

Automotive Exhaust Systems

Used at exhaust manifold, header, and downpipe joints where high-temperature gases must be sealed reliably.

Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Trucks, buses, and off-road equipment with diesel or gasoline exhaust systems that undergo continuous thermal cycling.

MRO and Overhaul Shops

Maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities that benefit from the reusability of Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets during manifold service.

Industrial Engine Packages

Stationary engines, generators, and industrial power units with exhaust manifolds that must be resealed regularly.

High-Temperature Gas Sealing

Any joint where a flat gasket would lose bolt load under thermal expansion — the spiral wound design maintains sealing load through the cycle.

Frequently asked questions about Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets

Procurement and engineering questions answered directly
Q1What is an Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket?

An Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket is a semi-metallic gasket made from V-shaped, spiral-wound layers of stainless steel alternated with a non-asbestos filler or flexible graphite. A carbon-steel outer ring centers the gasket and controls compression. It is designed for exhaust manifold sealing on automotive and aircraft engines.

Q2What engine types is KXT600-EX designed for?

The gasket is available for all Lycoming-style engines using the two-hole or three-hole exhaust manifold gasket design. It is also widely used in automotive, heavy-duty vehicle, and industrial engine exhaust manifold applications.

Q3Can Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets be reused?

Yes. Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets are reusable when the exhaust manifold is loosened or removed. They must, however, be replaced at engine overhaul to maintain a reliable seal.

Q4Why use a spiral wound gasket instead of a flat expanded graphite gasket?

A spiral wound gasket is resilient — the V-shaped stainless steel windings act as a spring and automatically adjust for mechanical compression, internal pressure variation, and temperature changes. A flat graphite gasket cannot compensate for these forces and will lose bolt load faster. The result is longer service life with the Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket.

Q5What filler material is used?

KXT600-EX Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets are available with either a non-asbestos filler or flexible graphite filler. Both are suitable for high-temperature exhaust gas sealing; flexible graphite is preferred for the most demanding temperature cycling.

Q6What is the function of the outer ring?

The flat carbon-steel outer ring centers the gasket on the flange and controls how far the spiral windings can compress when the exhaust manifold bolts are tightened. This prevents over-compression and helps the gasket stay aligned during installation.

Q7Can Kaxite manufacture custom sizes?

Yes. Kaxite manufactures Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets to customer drawings and can produce both two-hole and three-hole configurations in custom dimensions. Provide the bolt pattern, inner diameter, outer diameter, thickness, and desired filler material.

Q8What is the MOQ and lead time?

MOQ depends on size, quantity, and configuration. Sample lead time is typically 5–7 days. Production lead time for standard and custom orders is typically 15–25 days after order confirmation.

Q9How are Exhaust Spiral Wound Gaskets packaged?

Every Exhaust Spiral Wound Gasket is individually packaged in a protective sleeve to protect the spiral windings and filler during shipping and storage. Bulk cartons and palletized export packing are available on request.

Q10Can Kaxite provide technical support for gasket selection?

Yes. Kaxite's technical sales team provides gasket selection support based on your engine type, manifold bolt pattern, operating temperature, and preferred filler material. Response within 2 business hours.
