Flexible Graphite Packing for Steam, Hydrocarbon & High-Temperature Glands

When the gland runs hot — superheated steam, hot oil, thermal fluid, refinery process — flexible graphite packing is the packing that most plants still come back to. Expanded graphite yarn braided without binders or wire: heat resistant, chemically inert, self-lubricating, and conforms to the stuffing box under the lightest gland load.

Kaxite supplies KXT P400 in square sections from 3 × 3 mm to 25 × 25 mm, on 5 kg and 10 kg spools, and in die-formed rings or full gland sets. Low-chloride grade available for nuclear, refinery and stainless-steel service.

Why Flexible Graphite Packing Still Wins at High Temperature

Flexible graphite packing is made from high-purity expanded graphite that has been formed into a braidable yarn and then braided without binders or wire reinforcement. The finished braid keeps every inherent property of expanded graphite:

  • Heat resistance. Continuous service from −200 °C up to +550 °C in inert or reducing atmosphere — a range no PTFE or aramid packing can match.
  • Chemical inertness. pH 0–14, resistant to the vast majority of industrial chemicals except strong oxidisers such as concentrated nitric acid or fuming sulphuric acid.
  • Self-lubrication. The graphite flakes slide against each other, so no external lubrication is needed and the shaft stays cool.
  • High thermal conductivity. Heat is conducted away from the shaft rather than building up at the gland — one of the reasons graphite packing lasts longer than aramid in hot pumps.
  • Ready conformability. The braid conforms to the stuffing box under light gland load, so even a slightly worn or misaligned gland will seal.

Style KXT P400 Flexible Graphite Packing — expanded graphite yarn braided without binders or wire reinforcement.
When flexible graphite is not the right answer: graphite is attacked by strong oxidisers (concentrated nitric acid, fuming sulphuric acid, high-concentration hydrogen peroxide). For those media use a PTFE packing. For high-pressure/high-temperature service where extrusion is the main risk, consider graphite packing with carbon fiber corners or graphite packing reinforced with metal wire.

Pressure and Speed Limits

Rotary pump30 bar
Reciprocating pump100 bar
Static sealing (valve stem glands)200 bar
Rotary shaft speed20 m/s
Reading these limits: the three pressures are not interchangeable — they describe three different joint types. A packing that seals 200 bar as a static valve gland will only handle 30 bar in a rotary pump gland. Tell us the joint type and we will quote against the correct limit.

Forms and Sizes Available

Flexible graphite packing is supplied in a range of forms depending on the gland. The right form depends on the shaft size, the pressure class and whether the gland can be re-packed in place.

FORM 01 Square braid spool

Standard 3 × 3 mm to 25 × 25 mm square braid, on 5 kg or 10 kg spools. Cut to length on site for any gland size.

FORM 02 Pre-formed rings

Die-formed rings cut and shaped to your exact shaft diameter and stuffing box dimensions. Correct ring count per set — typically 3 to 7.

FORM 03 Die-formed sets

Full gland sets with the correct number of rings, plus optional lantern ring and end rings. Ideal for scheduled shutdown kits.

FORM 04 Custom cross-section

Non-square cross-sections (rectangular, oval) for special glands. Send the drawing or sample and we will confirm feasibility.

FORM 05 Companion braids

Related graphite packings: carbon fiber corners, metal wire reinforced, PTFE impregnated and jacketed.

FORM 06 Valve specialty packings

For high-temperature high-pressure valve service see super graphite valve packing and high-temp HP valve special packing.

Where Flexible Graphite Packing Is Used

Flexible graphite packing is the multi-service workhorse — specified wherever a gland must seal under high temperature and moderate-to-high pressure without the contamination risk of a lubricated braid. Typical installations include:

Rotary pumpsRefinery, chemical
Valve stemsGate, globe, control
Hydro turbinesPower generation
Centrifugal pumpsSteam, water, oil
AutoclavesBatch processing
Agitators & mixersChemical, pulp
Expansion jointsHigh-temp piping

Related packing materials in the same family include all graphite packings, graphite PTFE packing, carbon fiber packing, aramid fiber packing and die-formed graphite rings.

Packing and Shipping

Flexible graphite packing is supplied on rigid spools, wrapped in plastic film and packed in cartons or wooden cases suitable for sea and air freight. Pre-formed rings and full gland sets are packed flat with ring size and set quantity labelled on the outside carton. Customer labels and packing lists are available on request — see packaging & shipping.

Shipping is by sea, rail or air depending on your schedule and destination. Standard flexible graphite packing normally ships within 7–15 working days of order confirmation. Custom cross-sections, low-chloride versions and die-formed ring sets are quoted against real production capacity.

Buyer FAQ

What is the difference between flexible graphite packing and other graphite packings?

KXT P400 is pure expanded graphite yarn braided without binders or wire — the "clean" graphite packing. Other variants add reinforcement: metal wire reinforced for mechanical strength, carbon fiber corners for extrusion resistance, or PTFE impregnation for better chemical resistance. Which one you need depends on the joint type and medium — tell us and we will recommend honestly.

What temperature and pH range does it handle?

−200 °C to +550 °C in an inert or reducing atmosphere, or up to about 450 °C in oxidising atmosphere. pH 0 to 14. It is not suitable for strong oxidisers such as concentrated nitric acid, fuming sulphuric acid or high-concentration hydrogen peroxide. If your medium is outside this range, tell us and we will recommend an alternative.

What is the maximum shaft speed and pressure?

Up to 20 m/s shaft speed. Maximum pressure depends on the joint type: 30 bar for rotary pumps, 100 bar for reciprocating pumps, and 200 bar for static sealing such as valve stem glands. These are not interchangeable — quote the joint type for the correct limit.

Is KXT P400 suitable for food, pharmaceutical and pulp & paper service?

Yes. KXT P400 is braided without binders or lubricants, so it does not contaminate the process fluid. This is one of the reasons it is widely used in pulp and paper mills. If your application requires a specific cleanliness statement or migration test, state it in the inquiry.

Do you supply a low-chloride version?

Yes. A low-chloride grade is available for nuclear, refinery and stainless steel service where chloride stress corrosion cracking is a risk. State the requirement in your inquiry and we will quote the correct grade with the corresponding certificate.

Can you supply pre-formed rings for a specific valve or pump?

Yes. Send the shaft diameter, stuffing box ID and depth, and the number of rings required. We produce die-formed rings and full gland sets — including lantern rings and end rings — to those dimensions.

Do you supply material certificates?

Yes. Material declaration and low-chloride certificates are available on request, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV or client-nominated) can be arranged or hosted at additional cost. See our certificates.

What is the minimum order quantity?

No rigid minimum. Single spools and small quantities for shutdown work are accepted at the same unit price structure. Pre-formed rings and die-formed sets are quoted per project.

How quickly can you quote and ship?

Send the cross-section size, quantity, joint type (valve / rotary pump / reciprocating pump), medium and operating temperature. With these details we can give you a technical recommendation and price within 2 business hours. Standard flexible graphite packing normally ships within 7–15 working days of order confirmation.
