Graphite Packing with Carbon Fiber Corners

Graphite Packing with Carbon Fiber Corners

Model:KXT P403
Graphite packing with carbon fiber corners is a multi-fiber packing, braided from expanded graphite yarns and carbon fibers, the diagonally braided from graphite yarn, reinforced in all four corners with carbon fibers. The corners and body make the packing three times more resistant to extrusion and increase the pressure handing capabilities compared to traditional graphite packings.

Graphite Packing with Carbon Fiber Corners for High-Temperature Valves & Pumps

Standard flexible graphite packing extrudes out of the gland under high pressure and high temperature — that is the number one reason for early gland failure. Graphite packing with carbon fiber corners (KXT P403) solves this by braiding the graphite body with carbon fiber reinforcement along all four corners, giving the packing roughly three times the extrusion resistance of a non-reinforced graphite braid.

Kaxite supplies this packing in square sections from 3 × 3 mm to 25 × 25 mm, in 5 kg and 10 kg spools, and in pre-formed rings or full gland sets. Working range −200 °C to +550 °C, pH 0–14, up to 22 m/s shaft speed. Low-chloride certification available for nuclear and refinery service.

Send your shaft diameter, valve type and operating temperature — our technical team replies with a recommendation and price within 2 business hours.

What Carbon Fiber Corners Actually Do

Graphite packing with carbon fiber corners is a multi-fibre braid. The body is braided diagonally from pure expanded graphite yarn — the same material used in a standard flexible graphite packing — but the four corners are reinforced with carbon fiber throughout the length. During braiding the carbon fiber is laid along the corner edges, where a gland packing experiences the highest extrusion force.

The practical effect is that the corners hold the braid structure together under load:

  • Resists extrusion. Under high pressure the graphite body is contained by the carbon fiber corners instead of being squeezed out of the gland. Extrusion resistance is roughly three times higher than a non-reinforced graphite braid.
  • Handles higher pressure. Because the corner structure stays intact, the packing can be used at higher gland pressures than plain flexible graphite packing — see the pressure table below.
  • Removes cleanly. When maintenance time comes, the carbon fiber reinforcement keeps the rings in one piece, so they can be pulled out quickly instead of scraping out a smeared graphite mess. This reduces plant downtime.
  • Low friction and high thermal conductivity. The graphite body self-lubricates, and heat is conducted away from the shaft rather than building up at the gland.

Style KXT P403 Graphite Packing with Carbon Fiber Corners — expanded graphite body braided diagonally, carbon fiber reinforcement along all four corners.
When this packing is not the right answer: the carbon fiber corners add strength but the body is still graphite — so this packing is not suitable for strong oxidizers (concentrated nitric acid, fuming sulphuric acid, hydrogen peroxide over 10%) or for service where the media attacks graphite itself. For those cases, consider a PTFE packing or an aramid fiber packing.

Pressure and speed limits

Application Maximum pressure Typical use
Rotary pump 30 bar High-temperature process pumps, refinery pumps
Reciprocating pump 100 bar Plunger pumps, dosing pumps, high-pressure injection pumps
Static sealing 200 bar Valve bonnets, stem glands, high-pressure flanges
Rotary speed (max) 22 m/s High-speed shafts — much higher than PTFE filament packing
Steam service Recommended for saturated and superheated steam Boiler feed pumps, steam valve glands
Reading these limits: the three pressures are not interchangeable — they describe three different joint types. A packing that seals 200 bar as a static valve gland seal will only handle 30 bar in a rotary pump gland. Tell us the joint type and we will quote against the correct limit.

Forms and Sizes Available

Graphite packing with carbon fiber corners is supplied in a range of forms depending on the gland. The right form depends on the shaft size, the pressure class, and whether the gland can be re-packed in place.

Square braid spool

Standard 3 × 3 mm to 25 × 25 mm square braid, supplied on 5 kg or 10 kg spools. Cut to length on site for any gland size.

Pre-formed rings

Die-formed rings cut and shaped to your exact shaft diameter and stuffing box dimensions. Correct ring count per set — typically 3 to 7 — supplied pre-measured.

Die-formed sets

Full gland sets with the correct number of rings, plus optional lantern ring and end rings. Ideal for scheduled shutdown kits.

Custom cross-section

Non-square cross-sections (rectangular, oval) for special glands. Send the drawing or sample and we will confirm feasibility.

Valve specialty packings

For high-temperature high-pressure valve service, see super graphite valve packing and high-temperature high-pressure valve special graphite packing.

Where Graphite Packing with Carbon Fiber Corners Is Used

Graphite packing with carbon fiber corners is specified wherever a graphite gland packing must hold under high pressure and high temperature without extruding. Typical installations include:

  • High-temperature and high-pressure valve stem glands — gate, globe, check and control valves
  • Rotary pumps in refinery and petrochemical service
  • Reciprocating pumps and plunger pumps at high gland pressure
  • Saturated and superheated steam service — boiler feed pumps, steam valves
  • Expansion joints, mixers and agitators in chemical plants
  • Petrochemical, power station and heavy industrial piping
  • Heat transfer oil, thermal fluid and hot hydrocarbon service
  • Any gland sealing pH 0–14 media (except strong oxidisers) from −200 °C to +550 °C

Related packing materials in the same family include graphite packing, graphite PTFE packing, carbon fiber packing, aramid fiber packing and die-formed graphite rings.

Packing and Shipping

Graphite packing with carbon fiber corners is supplied on rigid spools, wrapped in plastic film and packed in cartons or wooden cases suitable for sea and air freight. Pre-formed rings and full gland sets are packed flat with the ring size and set quantity labelled on the outside of the carton. Customer labels and packing lists are available on request — see packaging & shipping.

Shipping is by sea, rail or air depending on your schedule and destination. Standard graphite packing normally ships within 7–15 working days of order confirmation. Custom cross-sections, low-chloride versions and die-formed ring sets are quoted against real production capacity.

Buyer FAQ

What is the difference between this packing and standard flexible graphite packing?

Both use the same expanded graphite yarn as the body. The difference is that Graphite Packing with Carbon Fiber Corners is reinforced with carbon fiber along all four corners and throughout the body, giving roughly three times the extrusion resistance and higher pressure handling capability than non-reinforced flexible graphite packing. It is also easier to remove during maintenance because the corner reinforcement holds the rings together.

What temperature and pH range does it handle?

−200 °C to +550 °C in an inert or reducing atmosphere, or up to about 450 °C in an oxidising atmosphere. pH 0 to 14. It is not suitable for strong oxidisers such as concentrated nitric acid, fuming sulphuric acid or high-concentration hydrogen peroxide. If your medium is outside this range, tell us and we will recommend an alternative braid.

What is the maximum shaft speed and pressure?

Up to 22 m/s shaft speed. Maximum pressure depends on the joint type: 30 bar for rotary pumps, 100 bar for reciprocating pumps, and 200 bar for static sealing such as valve bonnets and stem glands. These are not interchangeable — quote the joint type for the correct limit.

Do you supply a low-chloride version?

Yes. A low-chloride version is available for refinery, nuclear and stainless-steel service where chloride stress corrosion cracking is a risk. State the requirement in your inquiry and we will quote the correct grade with the corresponding certificate.

Can you supply pre-formed rings for a specific valve or pump?

Yes. Send the shaft diameter, stuffing box ID and depth, and the number of rings required. We produce die-formed rings and full gland sets — including lantern rings and end rings — to those dimensions.

Do you supply material certificates?

Yes. Material declaration and low-chloride certificates are available on request, and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV or client-nominated) can be arranged or hosted at additional cost. See our certificates.

What is the minimum order quantity?

No rigid minimum. Single spools and small quantities for shutdown work are accepted at the same unit price structure. Pre-formed rings and die-formed sets are quoted per project.

How quickly can you quote and ship?

Send the cross-section size, quantity, joint type (valve / rotary pump / reciprocating pump), medium and operating temperature. With these details we can give you a technical recommendation and price within 2 business hours. Standard graphite packing with carbon fiber corners normally ships within 7–15 working days of order confirmation.
