PTFE Microporous Gas Membrane — 0.1–0.5 μm Pore Size, ≥ 75% Porosity, 260 °C, Chemically Inert

Kaxite PTFE microporous gas membrane is a biaxially stretched, 100% virgin PTFE film with a controlled microporous structure. The pore network allows gas and vapour to pass while blocking liquid water, so it works as a hydrophobic gas-permeable barrier in membrane distillation, gas filtration, degassing, CO₂ capture and venting applications. The PTFE matrix is chemically inert against the full pH range, thermally stable to 260 °C, and mechanically strong enough to be pleated, laminated or die-cut without losing pore integrity. Available in roll, sheet or die-cut form, standard or custom pore size, with material certificate and batch traceability. Factory-direct price, PDF datasheet, quote within 24 hours.

What Makes a PTFE Gas Membrane Different From a Standard PTFE Film

A standard PTFE film is solid — it blocks everything. A PTFE microporous gas membrane is biaxially stretched under controlled conditions to create a network of interconnected micropores through the film thickness. The pore structure is what allows gas and vapour molecules to pass through, while the hydrophobic PTFE matrix repels liquid water and prevents water breakthrough. This combination — gas-permeable but liquid-tight — is what makes PTFE membrane useful in membrane distillation, gas-liquid contacting, degassing and venting.

Unlike ceramic or polymer membranes, PTFE membrane combines chemical inertness with thermal stability to 260 °C. That means it survives the aggressive chemical streams, hot vapours and cleaning cycles where other membrane materials fail. If your application needs a chemically resistant, hydrophobic gas-permeable barrier, the PTFE microporous membrane is the standard choice.

Why PTFE Microporous Membrane Instead of Other Materials

Advantages Over Other Membranes

  • Chemical inertness across the full pH range — no swelling, no hydrolysis, no leaching
  • Thermal stability to 260 °C — survives hot vapour, steam and aggressive cleaning cycles
  • Hydrophobic surface prevents liquid water breakthrough and keeps the gas path open
  • High porosity (≥ 75 %) gives high gas flux at low pressure drop
  • Mechanically strong — can be pleated, laminated and die-cut without pore damage

Processing Advantages

  • Roll or sheet form — easy to integrate into existing production lines
  • Laminate to non-woven, woven or mesh support for higher pressure service
  • Die-cut to any shape for sensor vents, caps and cartridge formats
  • Pore size and thickness can be tuned to match your flux and breakthrough requirements
  • Batch-tested porosity and pore size with full traceability documentation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PTFE microporous gas membrane?

It is a biaxially stretched, 100% virgin PTFE film with a network of interconnected micropores running through its thickness. The pore structure allows gas and vapour to pass, while the hydrophobic PTFE matrix repels liquid water. This combination makes it useful as a gas-permeable, liquid-tight barrier in membrane distillation, gas filtration, degassing and venting applications.

What pore size and porosity are available?

The standard pore size range is 0.1 – 0.5 μm with porosity ≥ 75 %. Custom pore sizes and thicknesses can be produced to match your gas flux and liquid breakthrough requirements. Send your target flux, gas type and pressure differential and Kaxite will confirm the recommended specification.

What is the maximum temperature and chemical resistance?

The membrane is stable from −200 °C to +260 °C continuous. It is chemically inert across the full pH range (0–14) and resists acids, alkalis, solvents and oxidizers. This makes it suitable for hot aggressive chemical streams where other membrane materials would degrade.

Can the membrane be laminated or pleated?

Yes. The PTFE microporous membrane can be laminated to non-woven, woven or mesh support for higher pressure service, and it can be pleated, die-cut or thermoformed without losing pore integrity. Lamination improves mechanical strength and allows the membrane to be used in cartridge and pleated-pack formats.

Is the membrane hydrophobic, and why does that matter?

Yes — water contact angle is greater than 120°. The hydrophobic surface prevents liquid water from entering the pores, which is what allows the membrane to pass gas and vapour while blocking liquid. This is the key property for membrane distillation and venting applications.

What forms and sizes are supplied?

Standard supply is roll form in standard widths, plus sheet and die-cut discs. Custom roll widths, roll lengths, pore sizes, thicknesses and lamination options are available. OEM packaging and private labelling are supported for qualified volume orders.

Do you provide material certificates and test data?

Yes. Each shipment includes a material data sheet covering PTFE grade, pore size, porosity, thickness, contact angle and temperature limits, plus batch traceability and a porosity/pore-size test record. Third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
