What Is a Ceramic Fiber Board?

Ceramic Fiber Board (also called refractory ceramic fiber board, RCF board or alumina silicate insulation board; Kaxite model KXT CF107) is a rigid, high-temperature insulation board made from ceramic fiber and inorganic binders by vacuum forming technology. Ceramic Fiber Board uses non-brittle material, so it has good tenacity, high compressive strength, good flatness and mechanical process ability. Ceramic Fiber Board is an ideal material for wall lining and back lining of heating equipment.

Ceramic Fiber Board is available in five grades — COM, ST, HP, HA and HZ — covering classification temperatures from 1100 °C to 1430 °C and working temperatures from below 1000 °C up to 1350 °C. Standard board sizes are 600 × 400 mm and 900 × 600 mm, with thickness from 10 mm to 50 mm. Custom sizes and shapes are available on request.

Prime Features of the Ceramic Fiber Board

Ceramic Fiber Board is engineered to deliver reliable thermal insulation at high temperature. Key features of Ceramic Fiber Board include:

  • Flat surface — the vacuum forming process produces a board with good flatness for tight furnace linings.
  • Excellent mechanical and structural strength — Ceramic Fiber Board resists handling and installation loads without cracking.
  • Equal volumetric weight and thickness — consistent density and thickness across every board for predictable thermal performance.
  • Low thermal conductivity and low shrinkage — Ceramic Fiber Board reduces heat loss and holds its dimensions at rated temperature.
  • Air-current resistant washing — Ceramic Fiber Board resists erosion from high-velocity combustion gases.
  • Non-brittle material — good tenacity even after thermal cycling.

Available Grades — COM, ST, HP, HA and HZ

Ceramic Fiber Board is available in five standard grades. Each grade is identified by its classification temperature, which determines the maximum continuous working temperature. Choose the grade based on the hottest point in your furnace.

Grade Classification Temp Working Temp Colour Density (kg/m³)
COM 1100 °C < 1000 °C White 260 / 320
ST 1260 °C 1050 °C White 260 / 320
HP 1260 °C 1100 °C White 260 / 320
HA 1360 °C 1200 °C White 260 / 320
HZ 1430 °C 1350 °C White 260 / 320

Classification temperature is the temperature the board can withstand without significant shrinkage. Working temperature is the recommended continuous operating temperature for long service life. For intermittent or cyclic service, use the classification temperature as the upper limit; for continuous service, use the working temperature.

Linear Shrinkage of the Ceramic Fiber Board

Linear shrinkage measures how much the board contracts after prolonged exposure to its rated temperature. Lower shrinkage means better dimensional stability and longer lining life. The following values are measured at density 320 kg/m³ for 24 hours.

Grade Linear Shrinkage (24 h)
COM −4 % at 1000 °C
ST −3 % at 1000 °C
HP −3 % at 1100 °C
HA −3 % at 1250 °C
HZ −3 % at 1350 °C

All values are negative (shrinkage). HZ grade shows the lowest shrinkage at the highest temperature, which makes HZ the preferred grade for furnace linings that operate near 1350 °C.

Thermal Conductivity of the Ceramic Fiber Board

Thermal conductivity of Ceramic Fiber Board is measured at density 285 kg/m³. Higher temperatures increase conductivity, so a board that performs well at 400 °C will insulate less effectively at 1000 °C. This data helps you calculate the required board thickness for your furnace.

Mean Temperature Thermal Conductivity (W/m·K)
400 °C 0.085
800 °C 0.132
1000 °C 0.180

Values apply to all five grades (COM, ST, HP, HA, HZ) at density 285 kg/m³. Contact our engineers with your hot-face temperature, cold-face target and furnace geometry and we will recommend the most economical board thickness.

Chemical Composition by Grade

Chemical composition determines the maximum service temperature and chemical resistance of Ceramic Fiber Board. Higher alumina content generally means higher temperature capability.

Component COM ST HP HA HZ
Al₂O₃ 40 – 44 % 45 – 46 % 47 – 49 % 52 – 55 % 39 – 40 %
Al₂O₃ + SiO₂ 95 – 96 % 96 – 97 % 98 – 99 % 99 % —
Al₂O₃ + SiO₂ + ZrO₂ — — — — 99 %
ZrO₂ — — — — 15 – 17 %
Fe₂O₃ < 1.2 % < 1.0 % 0.2 % 0.2 % 0.2 %
Na₂O + K₂O < 0.5 % < 0.5 % 0.2 % 0.2 % 0.2 %

COM, ST, HP and HA are alumina-silicate (Al₂O₃ + SiO₂) ceramic fiber boards. HZ is a zirconia-containing (ZrO₂) grade, which provides the highest temperature capability (1430 °C classification) and the lowest shrinkage at high temperature.
